Skydiving

Have you ever wanted to skydive? Well, this is your chance to do it for free and raise money for Nyumba Ya Thanzi. All you have to do is: email us, we send you a sponsorship form.

You raise at least £350 of sponsorship. About £200 pounds will go towards the dive and the rest goes to Nyumba Ya Thanzi. The skydive involves jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet, about forty seconds of freefalling and five minutes of floating down to the ground once the parachute has been opened. For the jump you have a qualified instructor strapped to your back who operates the parachute…. all you do is fly!

Running
Running for charity has never been more popular with many events held across the country.  You can do a run and raise money for Nyumba.  Running is a great way to keep fit and with only the cost of your trainers to worry about, it’s a lot cheaper than joining a gym.  Running for charity could you give you that extra incentive to keep going.

Just Giving
With most people having access to the internet, online fundraising has largely replaced the paper sponsorship form.  Just Giving enables fundraisers to create an online page to email to potential donees.  Donators can make their donation using a debit/credit card and also have the option to Gift Aid their donation.  Gift Aid allows the charity to claim the tax that has been paid and it can make a real difference to the amount that you actually raise.  The advantage of the system is that the charity receives the money automatically and there is no need for the fundraiser to have to chase people up on their donations.

You can fundraise for Nyumba via the following link

Running events come in many different distances.  Below we have highlighted some of the most popular and well known events.

Marathons (26.2 miles/42 km)

  • The Virgin London Marathon
    • www.virginlondonmarathon.com
    • Previously sponsored by Flora, this is the mother of all running events. As yet Nyumba has not been allocated any charity places, however if you get a non-charity place, you are then free to fundraise for Nyumba via the Just Giving website. A common misconception is that you have to run for a charity registered with the London organisers.  This is not true. To get a place, the official method is to apply via the ballot system.  The ballot for the following year usually opens the day after marathon though the ballot opening times may be held in phases.
    • When you apply, you will be given two options:
  • A refundable application, or
  • A non-refundable application which gives you an extra chance of getting your place.
    • Applicants are advised in October as to whether or not they have been successful
    • Due to its popularity can be difficult to get a place directly through the ballot and you may have to apply every year for several years.
    • The alternative is to join an established running club.  Many clubs are allotted a batch of Marathon places and it may be possible to get a place through your club.  Joining a club is a great way to train with other people.
  • Other marathons
    • There are of course marathons occurring all over the world which you could use as fundraisers and they are much easier to get place.  Some of the main European ones are:
        • Paris – takes in all the major sites of the city.  Our trustee ayisha has done this one, and she says it’s very well organised and has a good atmosphere.
        • Berlin – a very popular course, especially for those looking for a PB (Personal Best) as it’s both flat and fast
        • Dublin
        • Stockholm
        • Edinburgh
      • There is of course the New York marathon which is a ‘must do’ for many marathon runners.

Half Marathons

10kms/6.2 miles

  • Asics British 10k
    • Held every July for the last 10 years, this is a lovely course around the top sights of London giving you a flavour of the London Marathon experience.  Over 25, 000 runners including the world’s top athletes and celebrity runners.  A fun atmosphere and great crowd support.
