Children at Chilanga School
Chilanga School in Kasungu, Central Malawi, is a boarding school which caters specifically to the needs of blind children. They have between 60 and 70 students attending the school.

In 2005, 2008 and 2009 Nyumba trustees visited the school. We are impressed by the dedication of the staff who work with extremely limited resources to give the students an education.

The head master, Mr Banda, explained how the school had a maize mill and that they use money earned from grinding maize to buy food. They also have vegetable gardens and a maize field where they grow their own supplies. They are keen to be self-sufficient but it is not easy as most of the parents cannot afford the school fees so the children attend the school for free with basic support from the Government.

Following discussions with Mr Banda about the best way to support the shcool, in December 2008 Nyumba donated fertiliser, 7 pigs and a new pig sty. The fertiliser will allow the school to significantly increase the amount of maize they grow so there will be plently to eat, and maybe some surplus to sell. The pigs are also income generating. They will breed them, sell them and eat them.

In September 2009 we visited Chilanga school and saw the new pig sty and pigs.
