Esther Thompson

Esther studied African and Latin American History (BA) at SOAS. While studying Esther worked as a promoter and fundraiser for Sakama, a Tanzanian band and spent several months in Tanzania in 2000 and 2001. After graduating in 2002 she worked for NGOs in Nicaragua and Guatemala and returned to the UK, joining the International Alliance of Patient's Organizations (IAPO) in 2006.

At IAPO she provided training, organisational capacity building and fundraising support for more than 200 patient leaders, representing organisations for people living with long-term health conditions all over the world.

Esther is currently studying at the London School of Hygene and Tropical Medicine for an MSc in Public Health, specialising in Medical Anthropology. Her thesis will be based in Senga Bay, Malawi and will consider health workers' attitudes to the introduction of mandatory HIV testing for women seeking prenatal care.

Esther visited the Nyumba Ya Thanzi nutrition centre in January 2011 and was so impressed with the work of the staff at the centre that she has offered to fundraise for Nyumba Ya Thanzi in the UK in order to support the development of this and other Nyumba Ya Thanzi projects.
